Giants sound pessimistic about trading up to draft quarterback

Individuals within the New York Giants seem rather pessimistic about the club's chances of acquiring an advertised top-tier quarterback prospect during the 2024 NFL Draft. 

"The Giants, sources told SNY, have loosely inquired with the teams picking one through three about moving up," SNY's Connor Hughes reported on Tuesday about New York's draft plans. "The problem is that none of those teams are overly interested in doing that." 

The Giants own overall pick No. 6. 

Most expect the Chicago Bears will make USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams the draft's first pick. The Washington Commanders hold the second choice and have been linked in different stories with LSU Tigers signal-caller Jayden Daniels, North Carolina Tar Heels starter Drake Maye and Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, multiple reporters continue to believe the New England Patriots will take a quarterback at pick No. 3. 

Hughes noted that the Minnesota Vikings possess assets needed to move up from No. 11 in the draft order to No. 4 to take whoever among the previously mentioned quarterbacks is still on the board. However, at least one former NFL executive thinks the Arizona Cardinals could surprise many by selecting a future replacement for starting signal-caller Kyler Murray via the fourth pick. 

Much has been made throughout March about the rise in mock drafts of McCarthy, in part because some scouts think he doesn't do anything "great" regarding his physical attributes. Hughes said on Tuesday that "league sources told SNY they expect [McCarthy] to be a substantially better pro" than he was in college. 

"He has everything you look for – size (6-foot-3, 219 pounds), athleticism, arm strength and accuracy," Hughes added about McCarthy. "He played in a pro-style college offense, is the ultimate leader, beloved by teammates and receptive to all forms of coaching."

The Giants are expected to start Daniel Jones at quarterback in Week 1 assuming he's cleared to play coming off the torn ACL he suffered this past November. That injury, coupled with the two neck-related setbacks Jones has endured since the fall of 2021, reportedly has Giants general manager Joe Schoen considering making a bold move to address the club's future as it pertains to the sport's most important position, but four other teams may ultimately thwart Schoen's plans. 

Big Blue can escape Jones' contract after the upcoming season.
